CURRICULUM

The 2º Ciclo encompasses 5º Ano and 6º Ano, catering to students aged approximately 10 to 12 years old. During these two years, students continue their mandatory education, embarking on a more comprehensive and diverse curriculum that further expands their knowledge and skills.

The curriculum of the 2º Ciclo is designed to provide a well-rounded education, preparing students for more advanced learning in subsequent cycles. Subjects covered include:

Portuguese Language: Strengthening reading, writing, and communication skills in Portuguese.
Mathematics: Building upon mathematical concepts, problem-solving, and critical thinking, mathematics continues following a bilingual approach, with classes alternating between Portuguese and English.
Science and Nature: Exploring deeper scientific principles and natural phenomena, with classes taught in English.
Social Studies: Delving into history, geography, and civics with greater depth, in Portuguese language.
Physical Education: Promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Visual and Expressive Arts: Fostering creativity and artistic expression, with Arts in Portuguese and Music in English.
Foreign Language: Further developing proficiency in both English and French.
- English is taught following the objectives of the Cambridge International Curriculum.
- French is taught as a third language, per proficiency level, with students either following the French National Curriculum or Français Langue Étrangère.

OUR APPROACH

The 2º Ciclo e represents a pivotal stage in a student’s educational journey. Building upon the foundation established in the 1º Ciclo we offer students an opportunity to delve deeper into various subjects while continuing to develop essential skills for academic and personal growth.

We consider our 2º Ciclo classes as a bridge between Primary School and Secondary School, which aims to meet the special developmental needs of early adolescence. Young teens are not simply older primary school students or young secondary school students. There are very important changes that occur during this time of life that require a unique approach to education.

In line with this vision, our tailored provision for our Year 5 and Year 6 students includes:

National curriculum delivered through a bilingual approach:
A flexible interdisciplinary curriculum that encourages active learning and student engagement;
A mentoring relationship between teacher and student, by providing students with one assigned teacher who will serve as a mentor/counselor to help them feel a sense of safety, confidence and purpose in their learning and oversee their overall well-being;
Small learning communities with approximately 20 students per tutor class;
A secure emotional environment with a strong focus on personal, social and emotional growth;
An environment honoring and respecting student’s voice;
A focus on expressive arts activities
Particular attention to health and wellness, with an extensive offer for Physical Education, where students enrol in Desporto Escolar, competing in several competitions across Portugal.
