International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

  • Developed by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), founded in 1968 in Geneva.
  • The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) was the first programme offered by the IB and is taught to students aged 16-19.
  • The IBDP organizes teaching and learning through six subject groups, underpinned by the IB DP Core
    • Creativity, Action, Service (CAS), involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies.
    • Theory of Knowledge (TOK), in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
    • Extended Essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
  • 6 groups of subjects
    • Group 1: Studies in language and literature
    • Group 2: Language acquisition – Includes Language B and Ab initio
    • Group 3: Individuals and Societies – Business Management, Economics, Geography, Global Politics, History, Information Technology in a Global Society, Philosophy, Psychology, Social and Cultural Anthropology, World religions (SL only).
    • Group 4: Sciences – Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Systems and Societies, Design Technology, Computer Science, Sports Exercise and Health Science.
    • Group 5: Mathematics – consists of two math programs: Analysis and Approaches, Applications and Interpretation
    • Group 6: The Arts – Dance, Music, Film, Theatre, Visual arts
